Schlichter & Shonack takes pride in its ability to prosecute actions as well as it defends against lawsuits. While we most often are called on to defend liability or contract lawsuits, we frequently represent our business clients as plaintiffs for collections, breach of contract and malicious prosecution actions.
We obtained the largest individual defamation verdict of 1998 in California - a $3.05 million result for our client in Smith v. Orange Blossom Lines, Inc., which was the subject of a "Case in Focus" profile in the Daily Journal's Verdicts & Settlements (October 23, 1998), and we recently prevailed in a class action lawsuit against the County of Los Angeles.
Our undefeated appellate practice has expanded recently with several significant cases settling on appeal after the opposition received the firm's appellate briefs.

Fees and Billing
Schlichter & Shonack also works creatively with each client to provide a competitive, and when possible, predictable method of determining legal fees. Unlike many other law firms, we routinely waive costs and expenses that most business treat as "overhead" -- mileage, fax, telephone, and routine photocopy charges -- which many other law firms bill to their clients (at a profit). We believe that these costs are our overhead and our clients should not have to pay for them. Certain services are offered on a flat-fee basis, others on a cost-and-profit sharing basis, as appropriate to the circumstances and within the boundaries of legal ethics.
